The truth is that sustainable travel is all about making simple choices to lessen your negative impact on a given destination - which can be really hard, especially when you're about to get onto an Airbus, which isn't the best for air pollution. Individually, each of these choices makes only a small difference in the big picture. But collectively, becoming more conscious about these little things can have a huge impact.
1. Take a BPA-free water bottle you can refill over and over again. All international airports have free water dispensers, which saves you money and avoids wasting plastic bottles. Buying a single-use plastic water bottle can cost up to £3! The best reusable water bottles are the Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated bottles - they keep your drink cool for nearly 24 hours. Want a coffee at the airport? Bring your reusable coffee mug as well; they will give you money off!
2. If you are staying at a hotel, hang up your towels after each use, which is the universal sign that you’d like to use them again. You don’t wash your towels every day at home, so why do it when you travel? Also, you can leave the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door of your room for the duration of your stay. This cuts down on chemical cleaning agents, electricity used in vacuuming, and the washing of bed linens.
3. Get yourself a clear toiletry bag instead of single-use plastic bags. It makes travelling through domestic and international security quick and easy. These travel bags are TSA approved, which makes them super environmentally friendly. They are made with premium strength PVC that is built to last long-term.
4. Try to book non-stop flights whenever you can. It’s the takeoffs and landings that create most of an airplane’s carbon emissions.
5. Take any leftover soap, shampoo, or toothpaste with you. Unused portions are often thrown away, and you can reuse the plastic bottles in the future. Or simply buy some reusable travel bottles and refill them from stations or your larger bottles at home.
6. And I hope this is an obvious one: take your own reusable bag when you go shopping. Plastic bags are so 20th century… You can buy the cutest little foldable reusable bags from Amazon or most retail shops for around £3! When we know we are staying in apartments and going food shopping, we always bring our reusable bags; it saves you buying them from the shop as well.
